Kim Chiu and Xian Lim is now the undisputed Box Office King and Queen! From the success of BAKIT HI DI KA CRUSH NG CRUSH MO to the successful TV partnership in my Binondo Girl to Ina, kapatid, Anak, their loveteam is undoubtedly the nationwide household name, the KIMXI.
Short Synopsis: Bride For Rent is a hilarious love story centered on Rocco Espiritu (Lim) and Rocky Espiritu (Chiu) who are both in desperate need of money. Rocco needs to get married to have access to his sizable trust fund while Rocky on the other hand is frantic for rent money lest her whole family gets evicted and homeless. Rocco conspires with Rocky who agrees to act as his “pseudo wife” in exchange for a huge “talent fee.” A series of sidesplitting problems arise as Rocco and Rocky implement their deceitful plot. Would their plan work or would it backfire on them with the possibility of them developing actual feelings with each other?
Direk Mae Cruz was able to share the plot consistently engaging from beginning to end. She made Kim and Xian excel in this project. I think we have a new Box Office Comedy Queen in Kim Chiu. In her very efforless wit and charm, she delivered her role effectively, away from her real life character. Though I know that Kim is typically funny, she owned the role and made me believe on her prowess. I like how Carmi Raymundo (Screenplay) and Direk Mae worked on Kim and Xian’s natural rapport to make an effective punch lines and dialogues.
Xian Lim, on the other hand performed better from his previous movie, Bakit Hindi Ka crush ng crush mo and The Reunion. This is way too far from a newbie, able to master the art of romantic comedy. He is now the new Leading Man to watch out for this 2014.
Being an avid fan of Box Office history, I cant help but compare Bride For Rent’s Pacing from Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan’s Got to Believe. The opening credit seems similar but Bride Fore Rent totally blew me away from its own awesome cinematography. Story wise, this will be one of the funniest Movies Ive seen in the last 5 years.
The 100 percent kilig was there. I am telling you. There is MAGIC!
While watching the movie, I was able to note important lessons in life. In a scene where Kim and Xian are talking about forgiveness, Kim said, “Kapag marunong kang humingi ng sorry, ibig sabihin non ikaw yung mas mabuting tao”. And Xian also said “When you know how to say sorry, youre a step closer to becoming a better man.”
Asia’s Queen Of Songs Pilita Corrales, who is equally very effective in her role as Lala, grandmother of Rocky did well too considering she is really a singer by profession. She also mentioned in her line, “The people you love the most, are the people who will hurt you the most.”
Bride for Rent is indeed not just your typical romantic comedy but teaches us a lesson of commitment, of choosing love everyday, to believe in Forever and learning to be a better man. I think I can line this movie up to the winning Asian romantic comedies I have seen dubbed in tagalog. The movie is good for export and I believe there will be an audience in Asian market.
Bride For Rent, the opening salvo movie of Star Cinema is the most bravest move from the production outfit. Coming from a very successful week of Metro Manila Film Festival, StarCinema bet on the success of Kim Chiu and Xian Lim. And they were right, Bride For Rent is the highest January movie ever produced on Philippine Cinema.
Update, as of Saturday (4th night) it earned 103 MILLION.
