Puregold Teatro Panalo Unveils 12 Finalists

From 373 submissions nationwide, 12 original works have been selected for the inaugural Puregold Teatro Panalo, a new platform dedicated to discovering Filipino playwrights and bringing original stories to the stage. The festival will run from February 20 to March 14, 2027.

Philippine theater is entering an exciting new chapter as Puregold Teatro Panalo officially unveils the 12 finalists for its inaugural theater festival, marking a significant milestone in the continuing growth of original Filipino stage productions.

After months of anticipation, the announcement brings together some of the country’s most promising storytellers, whose works stood out among 373 submissions from across the Philippines. Selected through a rigorous screening process led by respected names in Philippine theater, the finalists represent a diverse collection of creative voices ready to introduce fresh stories, perspectives, and theatrical experiences to Filipino audiences.

The historic announcement took place during a special live event at Cinema 16 of Gateway Mall on October 14, where the selected playwrights received their respective ₱100,000 talent fees. The recognition officially marked the beginning of their journey as pioneers of the first-ever Puregold Teatro Panalo.

For Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, Festival Chair of Puregold Teatro Panalo, the overwhelming response reflects the wealth of storytelling talent in the country and the importance of creating more opportunities for original Filipino theater.

“It was encouraging to see how many Filipino storytellers are eager to share their work, and it made choosing only 12 plays especially difficult,” Hayagan-Piedad said. She emphasized that the submissions demonstrate the continuing potential of Philippine theater to foster authentic connections through live performances and give original stories the opportunity to reach wider audiences.

“With Puregold Teatro Panalo, we hope to give these works the stage they deserve and, in our own way, help Philippine theater continue to grow,” she added.

Celebrated Theater Luminaries Lead the Selection Process

Behind the selection of the 12 finalists is an accomplished panel of artists and industry professionals whose collective experience spans theater, film, music, and Philippine literature.

Leading the festival as Director is Vincent A. DeJesus, a National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) SUDI National Music Awardee and a multi-awarded composer and playwright. He is joined by Jenny Jamora, a two-time Philstage Gawad Buhay! Award-winning director and accomplished actor; Liza Magtoto, a five-time Palanca Award-winning playwright; Marlon Rivera, an actor, award-winning film director, and producer; and Atty. Nicolas Pichay, a theater artist, lyricist, and Palanca Awards Hall of Famer.

The screening process also benefited from the expertise of Dr. Layeta Bucoy and Allan Lopez, both multiple Palanca Award winners, who served as Screening Committee members and helped evaluate the submissions before the final selection.

Adding further artistic guidance to the festival is Ricky Lee, National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, who serves as its Artistic Adviser.

Their involvement underscores the festival’s commitment to identifying compelling original works and nurturing the next generation of Filipino theater artists. With an experienced team guiding the selection and development process, Puregold Teatro Panalo aims to create an environment where new ideas can be refined, supported, and brought to life before a live audience.

From Winning Concepts to Fully Staged Productions

The announcement of the finalists is only the beginning of a much larger undertaking. Festival organizer Wishbone Collective Inc. will provide all 12 selected works with comprehensive development and production support, helping transform the winning concepts into theatrical productions.

Audiences can look forward to experiencing the finalists’ works when Puregold Teatro Panalo runs from February 20 to March 14, 2027.

The festival will also offer an additional opportunity for two outstanding productions to continue their theatrical journeys. As the event concludes, one straight play and one musical will each receive an additional development grant, allowing their creators to expand their works into full-length theatrical productions.

This added support gives the festival a purpose that extends beyond staging performances. By investing in the development of original works, Puregold Teatro Panalo can help playwrights and creative teams build on their ideas and explore opportunities for their stories to grow beyond their initial productions.

A New Platform for Original Filipino Theater

Puregold Teatro Panalo arrives at a time when nurturing homegrown creative talent remains essential to the continued development of the Philippine arts and entertainment industry. Original stage productions provide opportunities for Filipino artists to explore local experiences, challenge conventional storytelling, and connect with audiences through the immediacy of live performance.

By opening its doors to submissions from across the country and selecting 12 works from 373 entries, the festival offers a platform for established and emerging storytellers to bring their creative visions to the stage. Its combination of talent fees, professional mentorship, production support, and further development grants also creates a pathway for selected works to progress from initial concepts to fully realized productions.

More importantly, the inaugural festival highlights the value of investing in Filipino stories and the people who create them. Every play represents an opportunity to discover a different voice, perspective, or theatrical possibility, contributing to a richer and more diverse Philippine theater landscape.

With its inaugural batch of finalists now announced, Puregold Teatro Panalo is poised to become an exciting addition to the country’s performing arts calendar.

Twelve original works have earned their place in the festival’s historic first edition. The next milestone will come when these stories reach the stage in 2027, bringing together playwrights, performers, production teams, and audiences in a celebration of Filipino creativity.

As the countdown begins, Puregold Teatro Panalo sends a clear message: the future of Philippine theater depends on creating opportunities for original stories to be told, developed, and experienced.

And when the curtains rise from February 20 to March 14, 2027, Filipino audiences will have the opportunity to witness the beginning of a promising new chapter for Philippine theater.

The stage is set, the finalists are ready, and the next generation of Filipino theatrical storytelling is about to take center stage.
