Puregold Teatro Panalo Gets 373 Entries for Inaugural Festival

Puregold Teatro Panalo is making a strong entrance into the Philippine theater scene, receiving an impressive 373 submissions for its inaugural festival and highlighting the wealth of original stories waiting to be brought to the stage.

Presented by Puregold and produced and organized by Wishbone Collective, Inc., Teatro Panalo was created as a platform to discover, develop, and stage original Filipino theater works.

Its first call for submissions ran from August 8 to September 11, welcoming both emerging and established Filipino playwrights. Writers were invited to submit original one-act plays, whether newly written or previously staged, across different genres, styles, and theatrical forms.

The response was significant: 373 entries were submitted in just over a month.

For a festival entering its first edition, the turnout provides Teatro Panalo with a substantial pool of Filipino theatrical works and offers a glimpse into the range of stories and voices present within the country’s theater community.

A New Platform for Filipino Playwrights

Festival Director Vincent de Jesus said the response has made the Teatro Panalo team even more excited about the next stage of the festival.

“For our first year, receiving 373 entries is already something to be grateful for. It tells us that many Filipino writers out there have stories they want to share and develop for the stage. Now, our responsibility is to look closely at these works, recognize the voices behind them, and give the selected pieces the support they need to grow,” de Jesus said.

Beyond being a theater festival, Teatro Panalo is envisioned as an incubation and development platform for original Filipino theater.

Selected works will undergo development with theater professionals and receive resources intended to help transform the submitted scripts into fully realized stage productions.

The initiative also aims to create opportunities beyond playwrights, bringing together the wider theater community, including directors, actors, designers, and other creatives involved in producing a theatrical work.

“Teatro Panalo aims to expand and strengthen the theater ecosystem by creating more opportunities not only for established and emerging writers, but also for directors, actors, and everyone involved in bringing a production to life,” de Jesus added.

“By giving more theater artists the chance to create and collaborate, and building on the work of the theater festivals that came before us, we hope to contribute to a bigger, and more sustainable theater community.”

Only 12 Works Will Make It to the Stage

From the 373 submissions, only 12 original works will ultimately be selected for full production.

The lineup will consist of:

  • 8 straight plays
  • 4 musicals

Each selected playwright will receive ₱100,000 in financial compensation, alongside development and production support for their work.

But for two selected works, the journey will continue even after the festival.

Following the festival run, one straight play and one musical will receive full-length development grants. The grants will provide the opportunity for the two works to expand beyond their original one-act formats and potentially develop into full-length productions.

Puregold Brings Its “Panalo” Platform to Theater

Teatro Panalo expands Puregold’s support for Filipino storytelling into another creative medium.

The company has previously used its “Panalo” platform to support Filipino stories through its annual film festival. With Teatro Panalo, that initiative now moves into live theater, providing playwrights with another avenue to experiment, develop their craft, collaborate with theater professionals, and connect with audiences.

The initial 373 submissions demonstrate the level of interest in a platform focused specifically on original Filipino theater.

The challenge now shifts to the selection process: from hundreds of submissions, 12 works will be chosen to become the inaugural productions of Puregold Teatro Panalo.

The first Puregold Teatro Panalo is scheduled to run from February 18 to March 14, 2027. For announcements and updates, audiences and theater enthusiasts can follow the official Puregold Teatro Panalo Facebook page.
