2016 is another challenging year for Philippine Movie Industry. With less than eighty movies screened commercially nationwide, the future of Pinoy Film-making remains a gamble for producers and filmakers. However, with the left and right recognition worldwide for the Filipino films since January, we can still hope that we are still running a good darn fight in terms of quality ans story telling.
I am not going to talk about audience behavior nor plight of producing a movie. This article will focus on Box Office for 2016 alone and that is what Ive been sharing you since then. Currently, Barcelona A Love Untold by Olivia Lamasan breaks every single box office records noted for the year including the well received Vilma Santos film with Angel Locsin and Xian Lim.
Domestically, Lamasan’s movie grossed above two hundred million pesos and earned another hundred million from international screening. There are quire a few big films released commercially particularly movies with John Lloyd Cruz, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, Ma Rosa from Brillante Mendoza and Lav Diaz’ Ang Babaeng Humayo which gained respect from international jurors. The last two didn’t fare in the box office here with less than 20 million domestic gross.
Star Cinema remains the top production outfit to released most number of movies with Viva Films placed in second which released less than 10 commercial movies, Regal Entertainment with less than 5. Thank you to few Festival events we had quite a few interesting films specially released such as Singkwento International Film Festival film, sinag Maynila,ToFarm Film Festival, QCinema, Cinema One and CineFilipino entry.
Guillermo Mendoza awards annually recognize Box Office milestones in terms of gross receipts and other factors. For a long time, Vilma Santos, Angel Locsin and Xian Lim hold the possible aspirants to recieve the Box Office King and Queen for 2016. When John Lloyd Cruz- Jennylyn Mercado didn’t make to break Bernal’s Everything About Her gross receipts, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza movie were expected to top the competition. Up to now, producers are silent about the final gross of the movie, “Imagine You and Me.”
That leaves Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo as the possible Box Office King and Queen for 2016 after they hold the record breaking success for the movie. But it is too early to predict. There are few more movies to be screened commercially such as Star Cinema’s Unmarried Wife starring Dingdong Dantes and Angelica Panganiban. You might think that this will not fare in the box office competition but let me remind you that in 2011, we thought that Sarah Geronimo and Gerald Anderson will be hailed Box Office King and Queen for Catch Me Im In Love success but Viva films released No Other Woman, a similar movie about husband and wife starring Derek Ramsey, Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes and they ended up as the runaway Box Office King and Queen for 2011. Another upcoming movie with Angel Locsin, Sam Milby and Zanjoe Marudo might steal the limelight this October.
A follower asked me on twitter whether Daniel and Kathryn be the youngest to received the Box Office King and Queen title. The answer is no. Tirso Cruz III recieved his Box Office King title in 1973 at the age of 20 while Aiza Seguerra secured the award at the age of 5 for Wake Up Little Sussie in 1988.
Metro Manila film Festival is coming and there are possible entries from huge outfit casting Vic Sotto, Vice Ganda, Coco Martin, Kris Aquino and Aiai Delas Alas but I think that would fall under the Phenomenal stars. However, we can’t still predict the Guillermo Mendoza award whether they will give the title to Barcelona stars Daniel and Kathryn.
