1. Any Genre, Style or Theme Is Welcome
Puregold Teatro Panalo is open to amateur and professional playwrights aged 18 and above, giving both emerging and established writers the opportunity to participate. There are also no restrictions on genre, style or theme. Playwrights can submit works ranging from comedy and drama to experimental theater and musicals. Scripts may be written in English or any Filipino language. Entries written in regional languages, however, must include an English translation. The wide-ranging format is designed to encourage stories that capture the many different experiences, perspectives and voices of Filipinos.
Whether your story is funny, heartbreaking, unconventional or deeply rooted in a particular community, there is room for it at Teatro Panalo.
2. Only 12 Works Will Make It to the Stage
With potentially numerous submissions, competition is expected to be tight.
The festival’s Selection Committee will ultimately choose 12 works for its inaugural lineup:
- Eight straight plays
- Four musicals
The selected works will receive full production support and will be professionally staged during the Puregold Teatro Panalo festival, which is scheduled to take place sometime between February and March 2027. The official venue will be announced separately. For the 12 chosen playwrights, this means their work won’t simply sit inside a competition folder or remain a script on a computer.
It will be performed live.
3. AI-Generated Creative Writing Is Not Allowed
For writers wondering whether they can use artificial intelligence to develop their submission, Puregold Teatro Panalo has drawn a clear line. AI-generated creative content is prohibited.
This includes AI-generated:
- Plot
- Characters
- Story structure
- Scenes
- Dialogue
- Lyrics
- Other major creative elements
The festival does allow AI for non-creative assistance, such as general research, fact-checking, organization, formatting and proofreading. But when it comes to the heart and soul of the play, the writing must come from the playwright. The rule underscores the festival’s emphasis on authentic human storytelling and original Filipino creative voices.
4. Each Selected Playwright Gets ₱100,000
Getting selected doesn’t just come with the prestige of having your work staged. Each of the 12 selected playwrights will receive a ₱100,000 fee for their work. The festival will also shoulder the production costs for the staging, including the professional fees of the cast and crew. Playwrights may recommend a director for their production, although the festival organizers will have the final say in the appointment. For emerging writers in particular, the combination of a professional production, financial support and exposure to theater audiences could be a significant opportunity.
5. Playwrights Keep Ownership of Their Work
Another important consideration for applicants is intellectual property. Playwrights retain ownership of their submitted works, while granting Wishbone Collective the right to stage and produce their selected work under the festival’s terms. But the relationship could potentially continue after Teatro Panalo.
Wishbone Collective reserves the right to further develop and stage selected works as full-length theatrical productions for up to five years following the festival run. That means a one-act play that begins its journey at Teatro Panalo could potentially evolve into something much bigger. A short theatrical piece could become a full-length production—and the festival could become the first chapter of that journey.
6. The Deadline Is September 11
Aspiring playwrights don’t have much time to put their work together. Applications are being accepted online until 11:59 p.m. on September 11. Each playwright may submit up to two entries, although only one work per applicant may ultimately be selected.
