SERIES REVIEW: Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay

I’m so glad I binged Widows Bay before my Apple TV+ subscription expires next week!  It wasn’t even at the top of my watchlist, but after seeing a few good reviews, I gave it a shot. Safe to say, no regrets.

If you’re expecting nonstop jump scares, this isn’t that kind of show. Widows Bay takes its time. It slowly builds up the tension until you realize you’ve been sitting there feeling uneasy the entire episode. It’s the kind of horror that creeps up on you instead of shouting in your face, and honestly, that’s exactly why it works. The whole setting—the foggy town, the random disappearances, and that constant feeling that someone (or something) is watching—makes everything feel so unsettling.

As someone who grew up watching local horror, I kept getting major Okat Okat vibes. Remember that feeling of waiting for the next episode just to see what supernatural mystery they’d tackle? That’s exactly what I felt here. Some parts also reminded me of Spirits, especially with how it blends the paranormal with heavy family drama. And if you’ve watched Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara, you’ll definitely notice the similarities in the family secrets and psychological tension.

I also have to mention Matthew Rhys. I’ve been a fan of his ever since Brothers & Sisters, where he played Kevin Walker. I’ve followed a lot of his work since then, and it’s always a treat to see him take on a new role. In Widows Bay, he brings a quiet intensity to his character that perfectly fits the show’s eerie tone. He doesn’t need over-the-top reactions to command your attention—sometimes it’s just a look or a subtle change in expression that tells you something isn’t right. It’s another reminder of why I’ve enjoyed watching him as an actor all these years.

What I loved most is that it’s not just about ghosts. At its heart, the show deals with grief, guilt, and trauma. The supernatural stuff never feels forced; it just naturally connects with what the characters are going through, which makes the mystery way more engaging. Visually, it looks amazing. The gloomy, misty vibe and isolated locations create the perfect eerie atmosphere. Plus, the cast is solid—everyone looks suspicious, and every reveal just leaves you with more questions.

The only catch? The pacing. It’s definitely a slow-burn. If you want fast-paced, high-energy scares, you might find it a bit too patient. But if you like stories that gradually pull you into a mystery, you’ll probably end up binging it like I did.

Overall, Widows Bay was such a pleasant surprise. It gave me that nostalgic hit of classic Filipino horror while still feeling fresh. It’s creepy, beautiful, and keeps you guessing until the very end.
