What an spectacular opening ceremony last night (Philippine Time) of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games which aired live from Russia brought to us by TV5. together with fellow press friends and Sports and Olympic enthusiasts, we witnessed how wonderful Russia prepared for this year’s historical event. Well for starters, Russia has a rich Olympic history, ranging from some of the world’s most decorated Olympians to its capitol city, Moscow, hosting the 1980 Olympic Games. Russia was one of 12 countries that participated in the 1894 International Sports Congress in Paris, an event that triggered the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896. Russia’s General Alexei Butovsky was one of the founding members of the International Olympic Committee.
Of course we were very excited to see our lone contingent to ramp our national flag at the parade of athletes. He is no other the only Filipino representative to compete, a figure skater Michael Christian Martinez.
I will post schedule of activities that of course you can catch on TV5 as in the next 16 days, TV5 will be broadcasting over 500 hours of Olympic action from Sochi, including the participation of the three Filipinos who are competing in the Olympic Winter Games.
Here is our homegrown Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez. He will be performing in the February 13 eliminations in the hopes of making it to the top 24 finals on February 14.
Gilmore Junio, representing Canada, will be participating in the Men’s 500 meter (Feb 10) and Men’s 1000 meter Speed Skating (Feb 12). Meanwhile, JR Celski of the United States will be participating in 4 short track events – 500 meter, 1000 meter, 1500 meter and 5000 meter relay – happening at various days of February.
