(TRAVEL) Bacolod Organic Farm Tour, Penalosa Organic Farm Day 2

Continuation from our Bacolod Organic Farm Tour, we went straight to Penalosa Organic Farm in Victorias City the next day from May’s Organic Farm.

We are welcomed by Mr. Ramon Penalosa himself and shared their humble beginnings. The Penalosa farm holds seminars for farmers and tourists who are interested to learn  on how they could start earning from their own backyards. He explained agriculture very well, I was really convinced that time that Agriculture can really help elevate our status as a third world country. “We should eliminate the thinking of being dependent on other for the supply of goods.” He said.

Looking around, I already got the feel of what animals to raise or which crop to plant from the front of the farm up to the backyards. Mr. Penalosa mentioned that the local government provides the start-up capital for the people who were interested. They also sells piglets to the locals, teaches them and assists them in raising the animals, and when the time comes, buys the hogs back from them. Talk about sustainable profit for everyone.

The PENALOSA FARM MISSION:

In the afternoon we had an activity, to simply tour around the  farm and find something valuable.

We were divided into three groups and our group got the assignment of doing a valuation of anything profitable. From the gate to the backyard, I was amazed by how big a farm can offer. Mr. Ramon proudly shares that Negros is known for its farms, and more people come to Negros Occidental because of organic farming. Organic Practitioners from all over the world learn from us, and we don’t want foreigners to learn our technology and practices, then later on started exporting in the Philippines.

The result of our activity was indeed rewarding. We have learned how to run (well at least an idea) and how farming can really be a ticket to a better future. Negros is indeed a very rich province and having Penalosa Farm, among other organic farms not only in Victorias City but in the entire region. I think there is really an industry booming and will continue to boom until the next decades. We would like to thank Mr. Ramon Penalosa for that wonderful morning.

The family’s advocacy is to educate people that there is money in the countryside and no Filipino should be hungry in his native land.  In a time when everyone wants to take a bite of the city, this is a reminder that this kind of social entrepreneurship is what we need to make the best of our lands, to provide for families without having to leave them, and to profit while helping others make their own living.

I have one friend who already visited Penalosa farm before our trip and shares how to get there.
