Yesterday, November 8, 2011, A very heartwarming and promising presscon was held by Cornerstone Talent Management Center as Record Breakers Event Management and J & F Productions, in cooperation with Zest Air present The Songwriter and The Crooner: Jose Mari Chan & Richard Poon. With special guests: Pokwang & Noelle Cassandra on Dec 02, 2011 | PICC Plenary Hall | 8pm. Directed by GB Sampedro.
The event was actually an opportunity for me to finally meet the Legend Jose Mari Chan and his funny side which he effortlessly give to charming media and fellow bloggers. OPM fans are in for treat as two generations of crooners meet in one night only concert.
Besides the two singer’s love for all things classic and mellow, Jose Mari Chan and Richard Poon have been good friends for some time now, all the more cemented by their shared bond for their chinese ancestry. The show promises to be as good one as it represents the best of the past and the promise of a refined future for OPM.
What is good about this concert is that some of the proceeds will be dedicated to the AGAPP (Aklat Gabay Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa), a foundation headed by Pinky Aquino-Abellada and of course to the SPED children of Bulacan.
Jose Mari Chan is an award winning composer and songwriter. He won the Myx Magna Award in the recent 5th Myx Music Awards 2010 for his excellence in ballad and jingle music. In October 2011, the Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) awarded Jose Mari with a DANGAL NG OPM. (Pride of Original Pilipino Music) and in the same month of 2011, the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) honored him with a STAR AWARD as one of the country’s “MUSIC ICONs”.
He released his brand new 13th full length album in 2011, The Manhattan Connection, featuring his songs, produced & performed by Janis Siegel (of The Manhattan Transfer) and other American artists. Arranged by Yaron Gershovsky.
Richard Poon describes his music as “Fresh, Old-school,” which is only apt as his repertoire is filled with highly-energized, inspiring takes of the standards famously rendered by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart among others. Richard was a member of the defunct band U-Turn. He sang duets with lead vocalist Teri and played guitar. Poon also sings and writes his own music, one of which dubbed, “Lalala” was sung by Regine Velasquez and Piolo Pascual for the soundtrack of their movie “Paano Kita Iibigin.”
