MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Crazy, Stupid, LOVE’

Produced by Warner Bros. presents a Carousal/Di Novi Pictures production with stellar casts Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Analeigh Tipton, Jonah Bobo, Joey King, Marisa Tomei, Beth Littleford, John Carroll Lynch, Kevin Bacon. the movie is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Written by Dan Fogelman.

The movie revolves with Cal Weaver (Steve Carell), who gets the surprise of his life when he learns his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) has been cheating on him with a coworker, David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon), and wants a divorce. After moving into his own apartment, he met Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Jacob is a womanizer who successfully beds women each night, although he does take a particular interest in a young woman named Hannah (Emma Stone), the only woman to resist his advances. Not wanting to watch Cal keep drowning his sorrows night after night, Jacob agrees to teach him his trade so that he can have the confidence to earn Emily back. Because Emily is the only woman Cal has ever been with, Cal doesn’t have much experience, so Jacob gives Cal a makeover and has him watch his tricks at the bar.

Cal’s 13-year-old son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is in love with his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica Riley (Analeigh Tipton.) After learning of Cal’s new ways, Jessica, on the advice of a classmate, takes naked photos of herself to send to Cal. Robbie tells Cal that he believes Jessica is his soulmate just like he believes Emily is Cal’s soulmate. One night, when Cal is maintaining the backyard of his house, which he has been secretly doing since the divorce, he sees Emily making a call to him through the window, asking him how to restart the pilot light for the water heater in the basement. Seeing that she is not in the basement and the call was a pretense to talk to him, Cal becomes encouraged that she still may be in love with him and decides to try win her back.

I think the comedy is ok. Well Steve Carell has been on my radar in terms of comic series The Office, and seeing him on a serious notes, tackling issues about family and love is a surprise. He always play the role. I believed he is one hell of a Hollywood actor that deserves good projects. Ryan Gosling is perfect to play a womanizer, my biases are all based on his looks and his almost photoshop-ed body, as the movie told us. Complication in love, how do we know when we were on it.

For Emma Stone, I think i love the idea that she was chosen to do the part. Her charming way of delivering the lines, I feel like watching GLEE. Julianne Moore, I find her a little bit older in this film. But Josh Groban! Yeah right he’s in the cast! I wont spoil but you will have him in a couple of scenes.

I cannot explain how the movie made me smile upon telling its own story. The film discussed trust and how people unsatisified with what they have. Reality wise, there are times when we dont appreciate the present because something or someone come along. The movie also tackled confidence. They say that when you have that confidence in you, you will feel like invincible. Upon watching this movie it somehow confirms my stand. But later realized that it’s not enough. But then again I realized one thing. We do the things we wanna do to achieved that satisfaction this world offers- even we knew all along that it was wrong. That when we saw the scenario in our love ones we will in any way intervene. Just like when Cal realized Jacob is hitting on her daughter. I think i will suggest this movie to those who love romantic comedies. Simple plot, happens to everyone.

The movie opens this wednesday, August 17. In major theaters near you.
