Viu Original series K-Love is Serving us Expert-Approved Style-spiration

When it comes to sartorial inspiration, you can always rely on K-dramas. This phenomenon has a reputation for incorporating amazingly stylish looks that later become iconic! This is exactly why fashion is one of the aspects that Viu Original, K-Love, took note of. The series knows too well that it’s not just the beloved cliches, high production values, and swoon-worthy oppas that we’re after. We’re here for the fashyown!

Pam Quinones, Vogue Philippines’ fashion director, and JM Gumatay are the creative minds behind the K-best Squad’s looks, in case you didn’t know. Inspired by Kdramas, JM noted that the purpose for this initiative is “not simply to design attractive looks but to make every outfit more relevant to people who are big followers of Korean series and fashion”. Jen Delica, a Hollywood HMUA who flew all the way from the United States to fulfill Iza’s request, rounds up the team. Her gameplan was to make sure that the characters don’t merely look like those in K-dramas, “but relied heavily on Filipinos’ innate notion of beauty”. Everyone is dressed to kill, which you fashionistas will not want to miss.

Into Power Dressing?

No one does it better than Tish, the resident girl boss. Not only did Iza’s acting do credit to the character, but she also looked the part. Every time she walks into the office wearing clean jackets and finely made jumpsuits, you’ll know she means business. As a result, Jen revealed that all of her looks are fuss-free and simple to execute. In episode 6, she wears an all-red ensemble at the yearly regatta, and it’s one of Jen and JM’s favorite looks. If you want to pull off the ultimate power look, pair it with a crisp updo and smooth red lips like this.

Got a flair for the dramatics?

You’ll enjoy seeing Shiela in her influencer fashion moments. As competitive as she is, this momma always steals the show with striking colors, billowy sleeves, and OTT outfits straight outta her show-off personality. Whether she’s on a K-drama binge, working out, or in her sleepwear, she’s every bit fashionable. You’ll also notice how she takes it to the next level when meeting her batchmates. This is intentional as Jen shared that they “took a lot of inspiration from her very fashionable outfits that says “look at me I am fabulous!”

If you’re not a girly-girl like Shiela, look to the spunky Val for inspiration. Her character is brave enough to take on the tech industry, as evidenced by her wardrobe choice. Her choice of colors and fabrics, such as denim and leather, define her as a stylish lady through and through. In terms of color, she’s not afraid to mix brights and blacks, reflecting her bold personality.

Wanna Look Straight Outta K-drama?

Mimic the sweet casual style of Frances, which perfectly shows her sunny personality. Just seeing her in plaid pieces, aesthetic ribbon accents, and playful hairdos says that she’s heavily influenced by K-drama. This little miss sunshine also opts for fun silhouettes like babydoll styles, playful rompers, and sweet fabrics like swiss dots and tweed – very much like a K-drama girl! Take cues from her outfits, especially on episode 9… if you wanna look *aegyo* like Fran!

And, as with any other K-drama, the oppas always look great. So it’s no surprise that Jake Cuenca was cast as Jay when we first met him. Because modern fashion encourages minimalism, especially for men, his wardrobe comprises button-downs and his go-to suit-shirt-sneakers combo, which we think hits the K-fashion mark. His crushable vibes on K-Love are classy and comfortable. To look like a bonafide oppa, match it with well-groomed, clean-cut hair!

Another thing I like about K-Love is how the characters’ wardrobe reflects their storylines. The characters’ appearances are as bright as they are deliberate. JM noted how the crew was particularly careful to make each piece properly fit who they are, because “The method of developing looks depends on the people that the tale demands… each character needs a distinct approach”. After all, it’s true what they say: you are what you wear.

Case in point: when Tish is in love, she starts to wear bright colors, lacy fabrics, and romantic waves which shows her soft side. But on that ep where she’s lost and heartbroken, she’s all dressed in grey. Who would forget her sticky I-haven’t-showered-in-days ‘do? This is also evident when Val started to wear laid-back tees, showing how she finally lets her guard down with Calvin.

Tish and Fran, whose characters developed greatly as they journey to become who they’re meant to be, also featured wardrobes that evolved with them. But unlike these two, we have Shiela and Val, who try so hard for society to accept who they are – an uber confident stay-at-home mom and a liberal spunky tech entrepreneur, respectively. To mirror this, you would notice that their wardrobe always stands out – very much like their personalities!

On every K-drama night, we see them in their off-duty looks as well, except for Shiela, who always floats from the pack with her outfit and no holds barred thoughts. Whatever the weather, they do it in style!

K-Love is unquestionably a Pinoy series given from on high by the fashion gods. Visually appealing, with a luxurious clothing – proof that the series is consistent in executing it in true hallyu manner. “Our wardrobe & glam crews were one of my favorite elements about shooting K-Love. We had wardrobe stylists who were attentive to what our characters required and always brought something exciting to the table while still prioritizing our comfort as performers.” Frances is played by Gabby Padilla.

Pam, JM, Jen, and the rest of the crew were all aware of the assignment. As the series comes to a close, JM reflects on his incredible time working with K-Love. “Everyone on the team is really supportive and appreciative of the work that I do. “The recognition I receive from exhibitions like this gives me more confidence to do my best and push my boundaries even farther,” he says. “KLove is a tale that may be familiar to the Filipino audience, but it is handled in a very creative and sophisticated way,” Jen says, reflecting on her two months working on the series.

Are you a K-stan like Frances? Or can you relate more to Shiela’s extra attitude? Or have the girl boss vibes like Tish or Val? If you’re looking for tricks to up your K-fashion game doable in this tropical weather, this series should be on top of your list.
