So I just finished the newest movie streaming on Netflix, The Kontrabida Academy, starring Eugene Domingo and Barbie Forteza.
“Kontrabida Academy” is a film about a restaurant worker named Gigi (played by Barbie Forteza) who feels like everything in her life is falling apart. One night, a mysterious TV transports her to the “Kontrabida Academy,” a school for on-screen villains. There, she is invited to enroll by the “fierce and fabulous” Mauricia (Eugene Domingo), and she learns how to be “bad, bongga, and brave,” finding a new purpose and a way to get back at her enemies.

There’s something truly magical about a Chris Martinez film. I always subscribe to the fact that he has this unique ability to take a seemingly simple premise and infuse it with layers of heart, humor, and compelling storytelling that just stick with you. “Kontrabida Academy” is no exception. He crafts a world that is not only hilarious but also surprisingly charming, making you root for the characters even as they train to be the bad guys. And in this perfectly crafted world, Barbie Forteza shines. It feels like she’s been building up to this moment, and the camera absolutely loves her. She commands every scene she’s in, proving that this is, without a doubt, her era to shine. Oh, and Xyriel Manabat, you are definitely the acting diva in your own right. As for Ysabel Ortega, she is so promising and pretty. Can’t take my eyes off her during the event.
While watching, I couldn’t help but feel a nostalgic wave wash over me, bringing to mind the late Bella Flores in her movie with Rhian Ramos, “My Kontrabida Girl.“ There’s a shared DNA between the two films—self-aware charm that makes you sit back and just enjoy the ride. Both movies were very good at what they set out to do: make us laugh and entertain us to the fullest. They’re a masterclass in embracing the absurdity and running with it, which is something we don’t see enough of. Of course there were bad times, but it’s totally forgivable.
The movie has the same kind of clever, self-aware humor as the “Babae sa Septik Tank” films. It’s like a masterclass in moviemaking, showing you how everything comes together. And speaking of masterclasses, we have to talk about “THE” Eugene Domingo. Her performance in this movie is pure comedic excellence. It’s the kind of effortless brilliance that makes you believe she was born to do this. It’s obvious that she is now the new and rightful owner of the Comedy Queen title. She doesn’t just deliver lines; she embodies the humor in every expression and movement, elevating the entire film with her presence.
It’s nice to see our favorite villains playing the part in one project. It feels like a ball for our antagonists. So if you’re looking for a film that’s both smart and full of heart, you’ve got to see “Kontrabida Academy.“ This movie would’ve been a great entry in the MMFF lineup, definitely worth every penny. It’s a true showcase of brilliant direction and incredible acting, and it’s the kind of film that leaves a lasting smile on your face.
