Certainly, our PeopleAsia “People of the Year” awards have become much sought after and we have given recognition to presidents, tycoons, famous celebrities and other accomplished individuals who have made a difference in the lives of Filipinos in one way or another. The special award for Manny Pacquiao is memorable because he represents the ordinary Filipino who has worked hard and succeeded despite overwhelming odds. Manny has always believed that whatever blessings he may be enjoying are the result of his unwavering faith in God — and this faith makes him different from all other champions.
We would also like to congratulate the other “People of the Year” awardees that include my favorite senator, feisty Miriam Defensor-Santiago, whose “pick-up lines” are being picked up by a lot of Filipinos; our friend, Sen. Ed Angara, who has authored landmark bills benefiting millions of Filipinos; broadcast icons Mel Tiangco and Ted Failon, who dedicate so much of their time to social outreach programs that impact the lives of the poor.
We also have national artist Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera; multi-awarded composer Louie Ocampo; photographer par excellence Jun de Leon; Philippine Hoteliers Inc. president and vice chairman Evelyn Singson, who is proof that a woman can succeed in a man’s world; and Henry Sy Jr., the energetic chairman and CEO of giant property developer SM Development Corp. The magazine is also honoring two other notable individuals: business tycoon George Yang whose Golden Arches Corp. has provided millions of jobs to Filipinos, and “People’s Choice” awardee Maruxa Pita who has dedicated more than 50 years of her life helping street children through her Makabata School Foundation. She was voted into this award by fans of PeopleAsia on Facebook.
We’re turning 12, and allow me just to drumbeat a little and be proud of all our milestones over the years, one of which is the launching of our Apple iPad app version, our new and sleek logo and of course, our “People of the Year” awards night which will be even bigger and better than the previous years. Congratulations to all our staff in PeopleAsia!
