Tanghalang Pilipino has assembled some of the most revered names in the arts industry for its fantastic, highly-entertaining staging of “Pangarap Sa Isang Gabi Ng Gitnang Tag-Araw,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The list of heavyweights include famed film director Carlitos Siguion-Reyna at the helm of this staging, respected film actress Jackielou Blanco playing the role of Amazon Queen Hipolita, and King of Philippine Musical Theater Audie Gemora as fairy king Oberon.
The said production, which will run until October 16 at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, also boasts of the translation of National Artist for Literature and Theater Rolando Tinio. The King of Philippine Musical Theater Audie Gemora, who plays the role of Oberon, returns to the TP stage after 20 years of absence. His most notable TP production is “Noli Me Tangere,” where he played Crisostomo Ibarra with Monique Wilson and Regine Velasquez.
Nobody could have described the play better than its director Carlitos saying, “(It is about) Four lovers switching partners under the spell of a bumbling imp, a fairy king and queen at war, a fascist ruler and his Amazon queen, an amateur play staged by workers including a weaver transformed into an ass—just your daily news stuff in a world gone mad.”
And that’s how “Pangarap Sa Isang Gabi Ng Gitnang Tag-Araw” is – fantastic, fun, sometimes absurd, but truly entertaining.
Aside from Audie and Jackielou, the staging also features memorable performances from the charming, passionate lovers JV Ibesate, Lhorvie Nuevo, Marco Viana, and Antonette Go, seasoned theater actors Liesl Batucan, Teroy Guzman, Skyzx Labastilla, Richard Cunanan, Kristofer Kliatchko, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, with Aldo Vencilao, Doray Dayao, and the highly-entertaining Jonathan Tadioan.
“Pangarap Sa Isang Gabi Ng Gitnang Tag-Araw” may boast of stage superstars, but what makes this staging truly memorable, enchanting is the magical chemistry, synergy of everyone involved in the production.
