Here are some of the biggest surprises at the 2014 Philippine Box Office.

What an exciting year for Kim Chiu and Xian Lim. They opened 2014 with a bang. The movie BRIDE FOR RENT earned almost 326 million, the biggest January opening in the history of the box office since Star Cinema was born. Before the year ended, they also made another movie with Aiai Delas Alas. Directed by Mae Cruz, PAST TENSE wasn’t able to deliver its expected box office receipts, but it was definitely not a flop. Nonetheless, 2014 remains the year for Kim and Xian.

Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo also impressed the paying audience with their last movie project, SHE’s DATING THE GANGSTER. The movie made more than 286 MILLION and ranked 3rd highest grossing movie of 2014. The movie also stars Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta.

Erich Gonzales’ Once a Princess didn’t fare well at the 2014 box office. Even Shake Rattle and Roll XV did not make a good box office impression at the latest Metro Manila Film Festival.

GMA Films’ BASEMENT, starring various GMA artists, remains one of the movies with the lowest gross receipts in the last 10 years. Jun Lana’s Barbers Tale, despite being screened and recognized abroad, wasn’t able to deliver on the local scene.

Sarah Geronimo maintained her box office record in 2014. Her movie “MAYBE THIS TIME” with Coco Martin earned almost 140 Million. This is also Coco Martin’s year, considering some of his movies are way below the 100 Million mark. Feng Shui 2, starring Coco and Kris Aquino, made 100 million at the end of day 4 in Metro Manila Film Festival. Sarah Geronimo missed the Box Office Queen this year. She holds multiple Box Office Queen records with John Lloyd Cruz.

2014 is also considered the year of the book. Jericho Rosales made an adaptation of popular Bob Ong’s ABNKKBSNPLAKO. It earned more than 17 MILLION at the end of its more than 2 weeks of screening. James Reid is the biggest revelation of the year, along with Nadine Lustre. Their movie DIARY NG PANGET is the dark horse of 2014 earning more than 100 MILLION, the highest-earning movie adapted from the popular book online. They also made TALK BACK and YOURE DEAD as a follow-up to their success. The movie earned more than 80 million.

Vice Ganda is the undisputed, phenomenal Box Office King. The Metro Manila Film Festival entry from Star Cinema and Viva Films, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, opened the festival with a whopping 53.3 Million on its first day, making the movie the highest opening gross of all time in the history of the Philippine Box Office. It ended with 455 Million pesos.

Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes’ THE GIFTED by Viva Films finished its 4-week screening last September, earning around 78 million. While Vhong Navarro and Solenn Heussaff’s Horror-Comedy movie, DA POSSESSED surprised everyone with more than 100 MILLION Gross. Wenn Deramas’ MARIA LEONORA TERESA grossed 60 million, while FENG SHUI with Kris Aquino continues to break Box box office record in the current Metro Manila Film Festival, making 2014 a year of horror movies as well.

Pokwang’s comedy movie, MY ILLEGAL WIFE made a wonderful impression of almost 90 million. She finished EDSA WOOLWORTH, a TFC-produced movie, which will be screened this year as well.

John Lloyd Cruz’ “THE TRIAL” is a big letdown in terms of box office. Despite good reviews from critics all over the world, the movie wasn’t able to produce more than 100 million. THE TRIAL also stars Jessy Mendiola, Gretchen Barreto, and Richard Gomez. John Lloyd Cruz holds the most Box Office King Awards for the movies he made with Sarah Geronimo.

Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga successfully owned the 2014 Local Box Office Department as the Olivia Lamasan project “Starting Over Again” made an unforgettable impression of more than 410 MILLION pesos, breaking box office records from the last half century, including the entire existence of Guillermo Mendoza Box Office Awards.

We missed the Bong Revilla starrer and the Mano Po installment last year. Nora Aunor’s DEMENTIA also missed the TOP 10 highest grossing film of 2014. There was no Vilma Santos and Sharon Cuneta project last year.

No Major Angel Locsin, Angelica Panganiban, or KC Concepcion movies as well in 2014. But they are ready for 2015, with their respective movies to be screened very soon.
