Episode Outline

After having the seen the Pilot is it obvious that Fringe and the writers behind the show are brilliant, from beginning to end this episode was captivating. It begins by opening up depicting a group of passengers on a plane traveling from Germany to America in the midst of a lighting storm. An unidentified male caught in the middle of this becomes so nervous that he needs to take a shot of his insulin in order to get himself under control, he opens his briefcase and injects himself with what he believes to have been his insulin. Moments later he begins to feel even more uncomfortable and begins to make his way to the restroom while being yelled at to sit down immediately by a German flight attendant.

This is where things begin to get out of hand, as the man turns his skin is seen melting to the floor causing huge panic among the passengers on board the plane. Within just a couple of seconds the mans condition spreads throughout the passengers on board killing everyone in this harsh manner. The clip of a man’s jaw disintegrating in first five minutes had me spooked and completely hooked. As the pilot of the aircraft realized what was going on he enabled autopilot before he could be infected which leads the plane to the airport to land safely with no problems at all.

The person who will soon become the star of Fringe, Special FBI Agent Olivia Dunham is part of the team called in to investigate when Flight 627 lands. The FBI team, which includes Agents Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and her secret lover and colleague John Scott (Mark Valley) and is overseen by Philip Broyles (Lance Reddick), is briefed about what has just occurred and the investigation begins. Olivia and her secret lover John Scott are instructed by Broyles to investigate a storage facility related to a possible lead and while doing so discover a laboratory where it is clear that a number of animals have been experimented on for quite some time.

At the same time a suspect is seen fleeing and a chase begins, the person fleeing destroys the entire storage facility, releasing many of the chemicals used in the attack onto Agent Scott and then escapes into the night. When Agent Scott is contaminated the chemical it crystallizes his skin and Olivia discovers that there may be only one man who can help. The problem is that this man has been institutionalized for twenty years, Dr. Walter Bishop (Lord of the Rings’ John Noble), a genius scientific researcher. Things only get more complicated from here.

To her surprise the only way she can get to him is through his son, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), a genius misfit with no love lost for his father.

During his years working on a classified project for the US government, Walter Bishop worked researching the complex area of fringe science studying things like teleportation, telepathy, reanimation: the inexplicable things hovering on the, well, fringes of pure science. The remaining hour of the episode follows Olivia, William, and Peter attempting to figure out what has occurred and to capture the suspect in order to discover a cure to Agent Scott?s situation.

After several breath taking, action packed, thrilling, and unimaginable events the suspect is found, a solution is discovered, and John Scott is revived. Now we find out that this is only the beginning, the expected occurs. Agent Scott goes on kill the suspect and it is revealed that he played a well hidden role in what had happened from the very beginning. A car chase between Olivia and Agent Scott ensues which eventually leads to his death, ironic huh? Olivia left confused and speechless is informed by Broyles about multiple similar strange events that have been occurring worldwide which is being called “The Pattern” and tells her that he wants her to form a team to investigate this phenomenon. This is the premise for the coming episodes and it seems that we will be following the formation of this team and their investigations for quite a while.

Along with this it is also revealed that large corporation, Massive Dynamics run by former colleague and laboratory partner of Walter Bishop, may have something to do with these events. The final scene shows Agent Scott’s dead body being taken to what seems to be a restricted area of Massive Dynamics followed by two of the most cliff hanging lines ever leaving you wanting more.

Nina Sharp (Massive Dynamics’ spokesperson): “How long has he been dead?”

Lab Worker: “5 Hours
